All my white clothes have gone a yucky grey colour after washing, why is that?

Author: All my new white clothes have gone an old grey colour when I used my friend’s front load washing machine. My machine at home never did this. I am also careful to make sure that I separate light and dark clothes, and wash with other clothes with similar colours. Any suggestions as to why my clothes are ruined?
If it has a filter, maybe it needs to be cleaned.

it could be a problem with his/her washing machine. maybe its not draining all the lost colour from a previouse dark washes. or it could be the washing powder if its different from the one you usually use. all washine machines are different. try putting an empty wash on, to flush the machine out, then place the clothes back in the washing machine. make sure you always put white clothes at 90% unless stated otherwise.
if this doesnt help them return to ormal go to your supermarket and buy a dye for white clothes.

A front loading washer needs far less detergent than a top loading washer. What you are seeing is detergent build-up. You need to re-wash the clothes with much less detergent, and a little bleach – you may need to do this a couple times to gain the WHITE back.

You might want to make sure there isn’t a black sock stuck in the machine somewhere. Tricky devils. Always losing those.
As for what to do now, I suggest you get yourself some dark clothing dye and get your clothes to a nicer grey colour, or maybe an off black.

My mother told me you should always use a second rinse when washing whites (or run them twice, with no soap on the second run). Apparently the grey comes from not getting all the soap out of the clothes.

It probably was too much detergent. For a second wash you can also try using polident tablets. (The stuff for dentures.) For a full load of whites I usually use 4 tablets and let them soak for about and hour then let them continue washing. Good Luck!

Maybe she tossed in a grey item of clothing and the dye spread to all your clothes?
